Young Carers

"A young carer is someone who is under 18 who helps look after someone in their family, who is ill, disabled, has a mental health condition or misuses drugs or alcohol." The Carers Trust

Supporting young carers is an important aspect of our pastoral support at Wildern.  These students take on caring responsibilities at home due to family members having long-term medical or personal problems.

These circumstances can significantly impact a young carer's daily life and can present a number of challenges in fulfilling the expectations and demands of school. Click here for more information.

At Wildern, we support young carers by keeping open conversation about their caring circumstances, and inviting them to a regular young carers breakfast club, and to events and trips that can build friendships with other young carers, broaden life skills and foster career aspirations.

We also have a staff member designated to identifying and supporting the young carers specifically. Currently, that is Miss Stevens Broyd who has been our Young Carers Assistant for the last 2 years."
