Curriculum & achievement

We are proud of Wildern’s time-honoured reputation as an ‘Outstanding’ school.

Our students follow a broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum which prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

The vast proportion of our students in Years 7 and 8 follow a curriculum of English, Mathematics, Science, French or Spanish, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Design Technology, Food Technology, Computing, Art, Music, Dance and Drama.  A few students will follow a carefully-tailored curriculum which supports their transition into Year 7 focusing on embedding key literacy skills. All students have 120 minutes a week of high-quality physical education.

As you would expect from a large school, during the crucial GCSE study period in Years 9-11, there is an impressive range of qualifications and other accredited Level 2 courses, whilst still ensuring that our students have 120 minutes of high-quality core physical education.

The school strongly encourages students to study at least one foreign language to GCSE, and either History or Geography. This ensures that students have the correct qualifications that universities are looking for; it also supports the government philosophy of the English Baccalaureate.

In addition to the compulsory GCSEs of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and either the three separate sciences or combined science, students will select four further examination courses.

Currently Art, Computer Science, ICT, Dance, Drama, Design Technology, Food and Nutrition, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education, Photography, Religious education and Spanish are offered.

In our curriculum, we aim to be as flexible as possible and respond to the needs of every student. For example, for the start of Year 10, some students will have under-gone a further Pathways selection to consolidate their GCSE studies.

Intrinsically giving our students opportunities to achieve and experience successful learning which is, at times, personalised and bespoke to the individual.

Beyond Wildern, we work closely with our Sixth Form colleges to ensure a smooth transition to further education and the world beyond.
