Rights Respecting School

We are very proud of achieving this Unicef Gold Award accreditation as we believe that the United Nations Convention on the rights of the Child (UNCRC) is at the heart of everything we do.

Through our curriculum and extra-curricular programmes, our students learn and participate in discussions and topics that look at the many facets of the rights of the child from tutor time sessions, the Wow of the week to the impressive selection of charity work that takes place throughout each year.

Student leadership and student voice (linked to Article 12 - the right to express your views) is highly valued at Wildern and plays a crucial role in driving improvement across the school.  It also provides students with opportunities to grow as leaders, decision makers of the future in order that they are empowered to enter the wider world as active global citizens.

There are many examples where students and staff work in partnership together, to make decisions for improvement or to support each other in order that the school community continues to flourish; Summit meetings,  Learning Leaders, Student evaluators, student focus groups and our Transition Leaders and House Captains.  

The Whole School Charter is underpinned by the UNCRC and students voted for the 5 rights that they felt were important to Wildern.  These are: 

  • Article 8 - children have the right to their own identity
  • Article 12 - Children have the right to give their opinions freely
  • Article 23 - Every child with a disability should enjoy the best possible life in society
  • Article 29 - children's education should help them fully develop their personalities, talents and abilities 
  • Article 31 - Every child has the right to rest, relax, play and to take part in cultural and creative activities.
